Tug of Birth

tug-of-birth2Invited for lunch into a Miao home.

I noticed a rope hanging from the ceiling, in the corner of the empty room. I questioned the woman of the house with my facial expressions and hands – I didn’t speak Miao or Mandarin. She gestured back that mothers-to-be would squat there, backed against the wooden walls, pull on the rope and push out their babies.
